Inspiration is the cornerstone of design, helping us envision current possibilities and future transformations. Today’s design landscape combines creativity with purpose, crafting environments that resonate with our lifestyles and aspirations. From understated elegance to smart living solutions, the trends presented by this year’s SBID Awards finalists exemplify the dynamic evolution of interior design. Each year, we eagerly anticipate these entries, as they bring to life innovative ideas that inspire the industry and influence homes worldwide. Here are some key trends from this year’s submissions:

    Quiet Luxury

Quiet Luxury has become a prominent trend, making its way from the fashion industry into the realm of interior design. This trend centres on the investment in high-quality, minimalist pieces that possess a timeless allure. Utilising neutral colour palettes and premium materials, the emphasis is on aesthetic longevity.

Buckrail’s design ethos exemplifies this trend by merging sophistication with functionality. Their interiors feature custom furnishings, natural materials, and subtle colour variations that enhance warmth and ambiance. Likewise, Wadham Gardens utilises clean lines and an open layout, creating a serene environment accentuated by soft beiges, whites, and greys.

    What to Buy:

    • Invest in bespoke, high-end furniture crafted from quality materials.
    • Choose timeless, expertly crafted items that ensure long-lasting durability and style.
    • Opt for neutral tones and fine textures to cultivate an elegant and tranquil atmosphere.

    Nature’s Embrace

Biophilic design, or Nature’s Embrace, focuses on crafting spaces that establish a deep connection with the natural world, fostering tranquillity and well-being. The evolution of biophilic design is evident, with designers now integrating and showcasing natural materials rather than relying solely on plants in residential settings. This shift highlights the beauty and sustainability of natural resources, creating a sophisticated and enduring bond with nature.

SK Residence exemplifies this approach, seamlessly blending nature-inspired elements with contemporary luxury. The design features a wood parametric ceiling in the entrance, echoing the fluidity of water, while a large green wall in the family room reinforces the connection to the outdoors. Similarly, Bel Air Mansion offers luxury family living complemented by stunning views and a harmonious indoor/outdoor flow.

    What to Buy:

    • Incorporate green walls to invite nature indoors and enhance air quality.
    • Choose furnishings and decor made from wood, stone, and other natural materials to establish a cohesive design.
    • Maximise natural light with expansive windows to foster a connection with the outdoors.

    Adaptive Living

Adaptive Living prioritises open-plan layouts and flexible spaces tailored to meet the evolving needs of contemporary families. This trend is about creating homes with versatile areas that accommodate various functions and activities, ensuring both flexibility and adaptability.

West 53rd Street exemplifies this trend through its interconnected spaces and flexible design. While initially presenting as a sweeping expanse, the apartment features distinct yet interrelated areas. Thames City also highlights flexibility, creating environments that can easily adjust to diverse family needs and activities.

    What to Buy:

    • Consider investing in movable partitions to establish versatile and adaptable areas that can be reconfigured as required.
    • Embrace open-plan layouts to enhance openness and versatility in how spaces are utilised.
    • Select multi-functional furniture, such as sofa beds and fold-out tables, to maximise space efficiency.

    Intelligent Living

The upcoming era of residential design is characterised by smart solutions, as showcased by the SBID International Design Awards 2024. Intelligent Living incorporates advanced technologies that improve convenience, security, and efficiency.

Polo House showcases advanced integrated smart systems, developed in collaboration with architectural and engineering teams. Additionally, Homeplay has introduced The World’s Smallest High-Performance Speakers, measuring just 2.2cm x 3.7cm x 1.1cm, capable of delivering powerful sound throughout a room.

Lavinia Engleman, Director of the SBID International Design Awards, states, “Intelligent Living transcends the mere incorporation of the latest gadgets into homes. It’s about crafting a seamless and efficient living environment where technology enriches every aspect of daily life. This year’s entries demonstrate remarkable innovation in the integration of smart home systems that are both functional and visually appealing.”

    What to Buy:

    • Invest in smart home systems and integrated technology to enhance living quality.
    • Opt for energy-efficient solutions to lessen environmental impact.
    • Utilise advanced systems to ensure security and convenience.

    Celebrate Design Excellence

The SBID International Design Awards ceremony will take place in November at the Royal Lancaster London, where the global winners will be announced. Dr Vanessa Brady OBE states, “The awards ceremony this year is our most ambitious to date.”
