    Rhinoplasty with Professor Fuat Buyuklu

Rhinoplasty is a life-changing procedure, and choosing the right surgeon is critical to achieving the desired outcome. Professor Fuat Buyuklu, known as Dr. Fu, an ENT professor and facial surgeon, offers personalised rhinoplasty procedures with 25 years of expertise. His philosophy focuses on enhancing not only the aesthetic appeal but also the overall quality of life for his patients. Here are 10 essential things to consider before undergoing rhinoplasty, drawn from Dr. Fu’s extensive experience in this field.

    1. Take Time to Decide and Prepare Properly

Before committing to rhinoplasty, invest time in researching a qualified surgeon. Understanding what is technically feasible is crucial, as the nose you envision may not always align with what can be achieved surgically. It’s advisable to consult with multiple surgeons to gain a comprehensive understanding of your options. Furthermore, ensure that your decision is made during a stable emotional period and reserve 2-3 weeks for recovery after surgery.

    2. Managing Bruising and Swelling

Bruising and swelling are common after rhinoplasty as the procedure involves trauma to the bone, cartilage, and soft tissues. These symptoms typically peak within the first 2-3 days and gradually subside within 7-10 days. To minimise swelling, keep your head elevated, apply ice regularly, and avoid physical exertion that could increase heart rate. Following these guidelines will ensure a smoother recovery.

    3. The Timeframe for Final Results

It is important to be patient when waiting for the final results of rhinoplasty. Swelling reduces significantly within the first two weeks, but full recovery may take 1-1.5 years, with the shape stabilising over time. Those with thinner skin typically experience quicker recovery. Keep in mind that shape changes, especially at the tip, are most noticeable between 6-9 months.

    4. When to Resume Exercise

Exercise should be avoided during the first month after surgery to allow the blood supply to the nose to stabilise. Light walking is encouraged, but strenuous exercise and activities that elevate blood pressure should be avoided. Mild exercises can be resumed after one month, but it is recommended to wait at least two months before engaging in heavy exercise and six months before participating in team sports.

    5. What to Expect Post-Surgery

The first 24 hours following rhinoplasty may involve mild discomfort, swelling, and some bloody leaks, which are normal. Pain management with prescribed medications and ice application can help ease discomfort. Expect to have nasal splints and stitches, making breathing through the nose difficult in the first week, so mouth breathing will be necessary.

    6. Early Post-Operative Precautions

For effective swelling reduction, keep your head elevated. It is crucial to avoid sleeping face down. Sleeping on your back is recommended, and a neck brace or travel pillow can help prevent rolling over. Regular use of ice, as well as keeping a water bottle and lip balm handy, will also aid in a more comfortable recovery.

    7. Caring for the Wounds

Proper wound care is essential for healing. Use a cotton swab dipped in hydrogen peroxide to clean the stitches at the tip of your nose multiple times a day. After cleaning, applying an antibiotic ointment such as Bactroban will ensure a faster healing process. Proper nasal irrigation after removing internal silicone tampons is also recommended to help clear internal clots and secretions.

    8. The First Post-Surgery Checkup

The first post-operative checkup typically occurs on the 7th or 8th day following surgery. During this visit, the surgeon will assess your healing progress and remove any splints or dressings. Following the checkup, you’ll be given additional guidance on recovery and any necessary follow-up care.

    Conclusion

Choosing to undergo rhinoplasty is a significant decision, and preparing adequately for the procedure ensures better outcomes. By following Professor Buyuklu’s expert advice and adhering to these key steps, patients can achieve both the cosmetic results and the improved quality of life they desire.
