BYD Energy Storage has successfully signed an agreement with Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) for the world’s largest grid-scale battery energy storage project, boasting a total capacity of 12.5GWh. This landmark deal marks a significant milestone in global energy storage, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable power solutions. Combined with BYD’s previously delivered 2.6GWh project, the total collaboration between the two entities now stands at an impressive 15.1GWh.
Advancing Saudi Arabia’s Renewable Vision
This strategic partnership represents a crucial step in advancing Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy sector and aligns with the ambitious targets set in Vision 2030. As the Kingdom aims to achieve an optimal energy mix with 50% of its power sourced from renewables by the end of the decade, projects like this will be instrumental in stabilising the grid and integrating sustainable energy sources.
Saudi Electricity Company has been at the forefront of transforming the country’s energy landscape, prioritising renewable energy solutions to tackle the growing global climate crisis. By deploying large-scale battery storage, SEC seeks to enhance grid resilience, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and ensure a reliable power supply despite fluctuations in renewable generation.
Cutting-Edge Battery Storage Technology
The battery energy storage system (BESS) equipment will be installed at five locations across Saudi Arabia. BYD Energy Storage will supply its next-generation MC Cube-T ESS, incorporating its globally pioneering Cell-to-System (CTS) super-integrated technology. This innovation enables an industry-leading cell volume-to-system volume (Vcts) index exceeding 33%, enhancing efficiency and performance.
These advanced storage systems will integrate seamlessly with Saudi Arabia’s power transmission network, addressing challenges posed by the increasing adoption of renewable energy. The technology will help balance supply and demand, mitigate fluctuations in generation, and ensure a stable and uninterrupted power supply.
A Legacy of Energy Storage Innovation
BYD’s expertise in battery storage dates back 17 years, when it introduced its first pilot BESS system, pioneering the use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in grid applications. Since then, BYD Energy Storage has deployed over 75GWh of BESS equipment in 350 projects across more than 110 countries and regions. The company’s diverse portfolio serves various applications, including power generation, grid support, and commercial energy storage, forming a complete industrial ecosystem spanning research, development, manufacturing, and service.
With a proven track record in delivering large-scale energy storage solutions, BYD Energy Storage is well-positioned to execute ultra-large projects, such as this 15.1GWh collaboration with Saudi Electricity Company.
Pioneering the Future of Energy Storage
This historic project will redefine the role of electrochemical energy storage in the global energy transition. As the industry moves towards cleaner and more sustainable solutions, BYD Energy Storage remains committed to technological advancement and large-scale deployment.
Building on this milestone, BYD plans to intensify its investment in research and development, working alongside international partners to accelerate the transition towards a cleaner, more resilient energy future. By spearheading innovation and large-scale implementation, BYD is shaping the next generation of global energy storage solutions, reinforcing its position as a leader in the field.
