Global Fashion Summit Expands to China
For the first time, the Global Fashion Summit, a leading international forum for sustainable fashion, will be held in China. The much-anticipated Global Fashion Summit: Shanghai Gala Edition will take place on 7 November 2024, during the China International Import Expo (CIIE). Organized by Global Fashion Agenda (GFA) in collaboration with Chinamind NEXT, this event will bring together local and international fashion industry leaders for an evening of insightful discussions at a gala dinner.
A Decade-Long Commitment to Sustainable Fashion
Launched in 2009 by GFA, the Global Fashion Summit began in Copenhagen and has since grown into a globally recognized platform for addressing the industry’s most pressing environmental and ethical issues. Over the last 15 years, it has become the key gathering for industry stakeholders, inspiring actionable change to tackle the critical challenges faced by the fashion world.
The Shanghai Gala Edition will build on the theme of the June 2024 Copenhagen Summit, “Unlocking the Next Level.” As fashion confronts its sustainability challenges head-on, the event will focus on deepening collaborations and sharing evidence-based solutions to push the industry toward achieving its sustainability goals.
Gala Dinner and CIIE Participation
The gala dinner will pave the way for GFA’s broader participation in the CIIE on 8 November 2024, where Federica Marchionni, CEO of GFA, will deliver a keynote address. The focus will be on how emerging technologies and innovations can drive the fashion industry’s sustainability efforts, particularly in China, a country playing a pivotal role in this transformation.
China’s Growing Influence in Fashion
China’s role in the global fashion landscape cannot be underestimated. The country was the world’s largest exporter of readymade garments in 2023, boasting a 31.6% market share and export revenue of 165 billion USD. Moreover, the rise of Chinese ultra-fast fashion brands is shaping global consumer behavior, while the country’s luxury market has almost doubled since 2019.
Given these dynamics, the Global Fashion Summit: Shanghai Gala seeks to promote collaboration throughout the fashion industry’s value chain, address key environmental and social challenges, and foster knowledge sharing between international markets. By bridging these global divides, the event aims to eliminate information gaps and introduce innovative solutions to industry-wide problems.
The Power of Collaboration
Federica Marchionni of GFA emphasized the significance of this event: “We are thrilled to bring our established Global Fashion Summit to Shanghai China’s leading fashion city with the goal of inspiring sustainability actions and forging new alliances across the global fashion ecosystem. This Gala is a vital step in moving the industry toward becoming net positive for both people and the planet.”
Lynn Fu, CEO of Chinamind NEXT, echoed this sentiment: “China has cemented itself as a world leader in the apparel and textile market. Through this collaboration with GFA, we aim to not only push the sustainability agenda within China but also to open opportunities for international brands in the Chinese market. This event will also enable Chinese enterprises to expand globally, fostering mutual benefits for both the East and West.”
A Step Forward for the Fashion Industry
The Global Fashion Summit: Shanghai Gala is set to serve as a foundation for further activations in China, enabling both international and local stakeholders to collaborate on strategic investments, sustainability efforts, and innovation. The outcomes of this event will influence the fashion industry on a global scale, creating enduring benefits for the sector.
