Leila Thomas, CEO and Founder of the award-winning youth empowerment and social mobility charity, Urban Synergy, recalls meeting Zak Ali at a school event. Zak approached her, expressing a heartfelt plea: “Please help us to succeed in life.”

Leila reflects, “While I’m no fairy godmother, I recognised that a sharp young man like Zak had the potential to go far with the right support.”

    Zak Ali’s Journey:

Zak Ali’s story is one of determination and success. From his school days in Catford to earning a first-class degree from Cambridge University, Zak has navigated his path with resilience and ambition.

    Zak’s Secret?

Zak attributes much of his success to learning from those around him. “I strongly believe in the importance of learning from those around me,”  he shares. “I never hesitate to ask people about their journeys and how I can apply their experiences to my own.”

Networking is a crucial aspect of Zak’s approach. “I consider it important to connect with everyone possible.” Every conversation is a chance to gain insight and broaden my perspective.”

    Background and Education

Zak, a first-generation British Bangladeshi, was born in Lewisham and grew up in Grove Park and Downham in South London. His parents did not attend university, but Zak’s academic journey was supported by scholarships and hard work. He attended Conisborough College and later, Colfe’s School for sixth form on a Leathersellers’ academic scholarship.

    What’s Next?

Zak has secured a training contract with a prestigious ‘Magic Circle’ law firm to train as a Corporate Lawyer, with all expenses covered. Before starting this new chapter, he plans to take an extended gap year to travel and explore new experiences.

    The Impact of Urban Synergy

Urban Synergy played a pivotal role in Zak’s early career development. “Urban Synergy was crucial in shaping my career mindset,” Zak explains. “The charity gave me my initial work experience at Thomson Reuters and provided invaluable sessions on networking and corporate etiquette.”

Zak credits Urban Synergy with helping him overcome barriers and tackle imposter syndrome. “Leila Thomas and Dianne Johnson’s mentorship taught me that my background should never limit my opportunities. They instilled in me the belief that my hard work deserved a place at prestigious institutions like Colfe’s and Cambridge.”

    Advice for Future Generations

Zak encourages other young people to make the most of their mentoring sessions.  “Don’t let the lessons from Urban Synergy stay in the classroom. Embrace every opportunity provided and apply your skills in real-world situations. The only barrier you face is yourself.

Zak concludes, “Urban Synergy was instrumental in nurturing my ambition, and I will forever be grateful for their support.”
