Green, a leading Swiss data center provider, has announced the construction of its fourth high-performance data center at the Metro-Campus Zurich West, set to enhance its capacity to meet the growing demand for computing power.

Green is expanding its data center footprint with the construction of a new state-of-the-art facility at its Metro-Campus Zurich West. The new Data Center Zurich West 4 will add 5,526 square meters of data center space, designed for secure and energy-efficient high-performance computing, equivalent to a 12-megawatt output for customer systems. This expansion is a significant step in Green’s commitment to providing cutting-edge data solutions for businesses and industries across Switzerland and beyond.

    Responding to Surging Demand

The need for modern data centers has skyrocketed with the rapid adoption of technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the push for digitalisation across various industries. These advancements are driving up the demand for computing power and increasing data volumes, making it imperative for companies to outsource their data center needs to more efficient and flexible facilities. Many firms are finding that their in-house data centers no longer offer the necessary capacity, flexibility, or energy efficiency required to keep pace with these technological advancements.

As we approach another wave of investment, we’re doubling our data center capacities over the next two to three years,” said Roger Süess, CEO of Green. Cutting-edge and efficient data centers are essential for businesses looking to implement sustainable and forward-thinking digitalisation strategies. Our latest expansion is designed to meet the current and future demands of the digital economy, ensuring that our clients have access to the resources they need to innovate and grow.

    Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Design

Green’s new data center is designed with a focus on sustainability and energy efficiency, crucial for meeting the demands of high-performance computing in the future. The Data Center Zurich West 4 will feature waste heat extraction, enabling the facility to contribute to climate-neutral heating in the region. The waste heat generated by customer systems will be utilized by the “Naturenergie Eigenamt” heating network, operated by IBB Energie AG, providing a sustainable energy solution that benefits both the data center and the local community.

Additionally, the facility will use natural cooling (freecooling) from ambient air to minimize energy consumption. This innovative approach significantly reduces the facility’s carbon footprint and aligns with Green’s commitment to environmental responsibility. This design is part of Green’s energy-saving reference architecture, which includes photovoltaic systems to further enhance sustainability. The use of renewable energy sources, combined with advanced cooling and heating solutions, makes Data Center Zurich West 4 one of the most eco-friendly data centers in Europe.

    Key Details:

    • Latest-generation high-performance data center
    • Commissioning: 2026
    • 5,526 m² of data center space
    • Around 2,000 m² of office space
    • Climate-neutral heating for the region
    • 100% renewable energy in data center operations

    Future Expansion Plans

Switzerland, known for its business and scientific innovation, is focusing more on digital advancements, making it an attractive location for data centers. As demand for data center capacity continues to rise, Green is already considering new locations for the next phase of its expansion.

Switzerland stands as a crucial data hub in Europe, with demand for data center capacity set to rise, Süess stated. We are dedicated to anticipating this growth by consistently expanding our facilities, ensuring they adhere to the highest standards of efficiency and sustainability. Our ongoing investments are designed to position Green as a leader in the digital transformation, providing the infrastructure necessary for innovation and progress.
