Rock Icon Showcases Decades-Long Passion in Exclusive Railway Modeller Feature
Britain’s leading model railway magazine, Railway Modeller, has unveiled a rare glimpse into the extraordinary creative world of British rock legend Sir Rod Stewart. In its January 2025 issue, the magazine features an exclusive interview and detailed showcase of Sir Rod’s spectacular HO scale model railway, the “Grand Street & Three Rivers Railroad,” a project over three decades in the making.
A Grand Scale Vision
Inspired by the bustling cityscapes and industrial grandeur of 1940s America, the layout is an astonishing 27 feet by 62 feet. It boasts an intricate 900-foot mainline, towering skyscrapers, bustling docks, and lifelike urban scenes, all meticulously crafted by the artist. Sir Rod’s dedication to the craft has transformed what began as a personal hobby into a world-class exhibit of technical brilliance and artistic ingenuity.
Having recently relocated the layout from Los Angeles to his English country estate, Sir Rod has embarked on a new phase of enhancements, including advanced lighting, sound effects, and computer-controlled train automation. “I’m not happy with the lights—we’ve got to work on that,” Sir Rod shares, hinting at plans to add dramatic uplights and effects like thunder and lightning for a more immersive experience.
Behind the Scenes
Sir Rod’s hands-on approach is evident throughout the layout, with many structures either scratch-built or customised from kits to ensure uniqueness. “Nothing is recognisable—everything is unique,” he explains. Planned extensions include dockside scenes with large-scale ships, mountainous regions, and a tribute to legendary model railway artist George Sellios. The project will also feature additional track from British manufacturer PECO, further expanding its intricate network.
Craig Tiley, Editor of Railway Modeller, reflects on the scale of the achievement: “Sir Rod’s dedication and eye for detail elevate this project beyond a simple hobby. The layout exemplifies a remarkable fusion of artistic vision and technological innovation.
A Creative Escape
Despite his busy life as a global music star, Sir Rod dedicates up to five hours a day to model-making, finding solace in his workshop. He describes his workshop as a personal sanctuary, stating, “Stepping into it feels like entering a paradise,” highlighting the calming influence of his passion.
The feature not only celebrates Sir Rod’s remarkable work but also aims to inspire future generations of model railway enthusiasts. “It’s the greatest hobby in the world,” Sir Rod proclaims, underscoring his commitment to sharing his love for the craft.
Celebrating Railway Modeller’s Milestone
This special feature coincides with Railway Modeller’s 75th anniversary, marking a significant moment for the publication. The January 2025 issue includes exclusive behind-the-scenes photos and insights into Sir Rod’s creative process. Sister publication Continental Modeller will also feature the layout, adding further coverage for enthusiasts worldwide.
