The UK’s independent retailer of ultralight hiking and camping gear marks its anniversary with continued growth and innovation.
Valley and Peak, an independent UK-based online retailer specialising in ultralight hiking and camping gear, proudly celebrates its six-year anniversary on September 8th, 2024. From its beginnings in the picturesque Lincolnshire Wolds, this family-owned business has grown into a leading name in the outdoor equipment industry, renowned for its wide range of high-quality products and exceptional customer service.
Origins: From a Personal Need to a National Brand
Valley and Peak’s story began in 2017 when founder Mark De’Ath, an avid hiker, struggled to find a lightweight and warm camping quilt suitable for the UK’s wet climate. His wife, Mary, inspired by his challenge, designed and crafted a prototype that caught the attention of ultralight hiking communities.
“Our first quilt marked the beginning of something special,” said co-founder Mary De’Ath. “Our goal has always been to enhance the outdoor experience for those who love to pack light and explore far.”
On September 8th, 2018, Valley and Peak was officially established. Initially focused on producing synthetic quilts with Climashield Apex insulation, the company expanded its product line to include multi-use gear such as insulated pouches and bags for freeze-dried meals, which quickly gained popularity in ultralight hiking circles.
Expanding Horizons: Manufacturer to Distributor
Valley and Peak soon evolved from a gear manufacturer to a trusted distributor, introducing UK outdoor enthusiasts to premium international brands such as Big Agnes, Enlightened Equipment, and Zpacks. In 2021, the business expanded further with the arrival of Mark and Mary’s son, Jim, who joined as Head of Sales and Marketing. His contributions helped solidify partnerships with renowned brands like Nortent and Durston Gear, propelling Valley and Peak’s rapid growth in the UK market.
“Our success is a testament to the loyalty of our customers and our commitment to sourcing the best ultralight products,” said Jim De’Ath, Managing Director of Valley and Peak.
Pioneering Lightweight Innovations
Valley and Peak’s product range is a haven for adventurers seeking lightweight, multi-use gear. Their ultralight tents, weighing just 334 grams, and tarps at 157 grams, are prime examples of their innovative approach to packing light. The company also prides itself on offering versatile solutions, such as closed-cell foam sleeping mats that double as backpack supports or seating. Their personal care range, designed with multiple functions, is perfect for long-distance hikers needing compact solutions for personal hygiene, dishwashing, and gear maintenance.
Supporting Cottage Gear Brands
Valley and Peak’s dedication to quality extends beyond mass-market brands, as they also support small-scale innovators from around the world. Cottage gear brands, known for handcrafted, high-quality products, play a significant role in the company’s inventory. One standout product is the TrailBrush, a 2-gram toothbrush attachment that revolutionises pack weight for long-distance hikers.
“We are committed to showcasing the best cottage gear to our customers, providing access to unique, handcrafted items that make a real difference on the trail,” said Jim De’Ath.
A Bright Future Ahead
As Valley and Peak celebrates its sixth anniversary, the company continues to thrive, driven by the passion of the De’Ath family and their dedicated team. With over 100 brands in their inventory, the business caters to a wide variety of outdoor enthusiasts, from hikers and backpackers to bikepackers and wild campers. Their commitment to customer satisfaction is reflected in their 5-star Trustpilot rating and numerous award nominations, including a finalist spot at the 2024 National Outdoor Expo for ‘Retailer of the Year’.
Valley and Peak is poised to introduce even more innovative brands to the UK market, solidifying their place as a leader in the outdoor gear industry.
