Growing Demand for Childcare
In response to the widespread shortage of childcare placements across the UK, a primary school in Somerset has unveiled a new modular pre-school building. This timely expansion not only addresses the local demand for childcare but also creates space for thirty additional primary school students.
Childcare Crisis
The new facility arrives at a critical moment. Many parents throughout the UK face difficulties securing nursery placements for their pre-school-aged children. According to a survey conducted by Coram Family and Childcare, only one-third of councils in England report having sufficient childcare options for parents who work full-time. This shortage poses significant challenges for families who need reliable and accessible childcare solutions.
Significant Community Impact
Steve Macabee, Governor of Keinton Mandeville Primary School, highlights the impact of the new pre-school: The introduction of this modular building is crucial for our local community. It enables us to offer a full-time pre-school service five days a week. As a result, parents can depend on it, allowing them to return to work without childcare concerns.
The pupils at Keinton Mandeville Primary School had the unique opportunity to watch the entire construction process unfold. From the arrival of materials to the completion of a fully functional classroom, the project was completed in just six and a half weeks. The use of innovative modular construction methods facilitated this rapid turnaround. The students expressed their excitement, noting, We’re all utterly obsessed with cranes now.
Commissioned by Somerset Council, the modern, timber-clad building was constructed by Hampshire-based PF Modular. The company worked alongside education property consultants Futures for Somerset to ensure the project met all specifications. In addition to the modular building, PF Modular managed essential elements such as groundworks, landscaping, the installation of solar panels, and pedestrian access-controlled gates. These features contribute to the facility’s functionality and sustainability.
Feedback from School Leadership
Jo Crook, Headteacher at Keinton Mandeville Primary School, shared her enthusiasm for the new facilities: We’re excited about the new pre-school and the extra classroom. Every detail has been meticulously planned, and the team working on the project was incredibly respectful of our time and requirements. The entire process has been seamless and effective.
Welcoming New Learners
The new pre-school, aptly called ‘The Nest,’ has quickly become a lively and inviting space for one of Keinton Mandeville’s primary classes. Scheduled to open its doors to Somerset’s newest learners this September, “The Nest” represents a significant advancement in addressing the local childcare shortage. The expansion not only supports local families by providing additional space and resources but also ensures that young children have access to high-quality early years education.
By investing in this new facility, Keinton Mandeville Primary School demonstrates its commitment to meeting community needs and providing essential support for working parents. The introduction of “The Nest” is a meaningful step forward in improving childcare availability and enhancing educational opportunities for local children.
