In recent months, Torquay has been embroiled in a heated debate over the unexpected removal of 40 Torquay palm trees from the Italian Gardens.

This incident has sparked harsh public outcry and calls for transparency in decision-making processes.

    Background

In December 2023, SWISCo, a Torbay Council-owned company, felled the palm trees as part of a £30,000 project to revamp the Italian Gardens for their centenary celebration this year.

The trees, some of which were over 50 years old, were a notable feature of the gardens often called “English Riviera”.

    Public Reaction

The removal of the trees without prior public consultation led to widespread outrage.

Residents and visitors expressed their dismay on social media platforms, criticizing the council and SWISCo.

Many people are uncomfortable to see the once lush gardens, now in bare stumps.

    Official Response and Investigations

Torbay Council has initiated an internal review to investigate the sequence of events that led to the tree felling.

According to the council, the trees were removed due to their decaying state.

However, the lack of a recent public consultation and inadequate communication with council members is the highlight of the controversy.

Cllr Adam Billings, the cabinet member for pride in place, acknowledged the public’s concerns and emphasized the need for a thorough understanding of the historical background and decision-making process.

He assured that the new planting scheme would restore the gardens’ beauty and rectify the mistakes made during the project.

    Moving Forward

The restoration plan includes the introduction of 16,000 new plants and several new palm trees.

The council has pledged to improve its communication and consultation processes to prevent such incidents in the future.

The outcomes of the ongoing internal review will be available to the general public by early next year.

In summary, while the removal of Torquay’s iconic palm trees has caused great controversy, the council is taking steps to address the community’s concerns and ensure the Italian Gardens’ restoration aligns with public expectations and historical significance.
