A Unique Alternative to Traditional Celebrations

As Valentine’s Day approaches, many couples are looking for unique ways to celebrate beyond the traditional restaurant dinner. A recent YouGov poll revealed that only 6% of Brits spent Valentine’s Day dining out in 2024, highlighting a shift towards more memorable experiences. In response, Turo, the car-sharing marketplace, has curated a selection of the UK’s most romantic scenic drives, perfect for couples, friends, or even solo adventurers.

Cotswolds Drive: A Romantic Countryside Escape

The Cotswolds, with its charming villages and rolling hills, is a top destination for a romantic drive. This area, often featured in romantic films, is an ideal setting for couples seeking a picturesque escape.

    Key Highlights:

    • Broadway Tower – A historic landmark offering panoramic views of the countryside, including the Malvern Hills.
    • Broadway Village – A charming village with boutique shops and cosy tea rooms, perfect for a leisurely stroll.
    • Chastleton House – A beautifully preserved Jacobean manor managed by the National Trust.
    • Daylesford Organic Farm – A must-visit spot for gourmet produce, artisanal baked goods, and picnic supplies.

For an extra romantic touch, couples can take a detour to Stratford-Upon-Avon to visit Kissing Tree Lane in Alveston.

Route: A circular drive through Chipping Campden, Broadway, Snowshill, Stow-on-the-Wold, Daylesford, Adlestrop, Little Compton, Moreton-in-Marsh, Draycott, and back to Chipping Campden.
Drive Duration: Approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.

The Lake District: Breathtaking Scenery and Tranquil Stops

A short drive from major northern cities, the Lake District is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, making it a perfect romantic getaway. Even in winter, the scenery remains stunning.

    Key Highlights:

    • Ashness Bridge – A small stone bridge with stunning views of Derwentwater and Skiddaw, especially magical at sunset.
    • Borrowdale Valley – A peaceful drive through dense woodlands and alongside shimmering lakes.
    • Buttermere – A serene location offering breathtaking views and an ideal stop for a leisurely walk.

Route: A scenic loop starting in Keswick, passing through Borrowdale and Buttermere, with a stop at Ashness Bridge before returning to Keswick.
Drive Duration: Approximately 1 hour 5 minutes.

Snowdonia (Eryri): A Dramatic Welsh Landscape

For those looking for a more rugged and adventurous drive, Snowdonia National Park offers a stunning setting. With early blooms of daffodils and snowdrops, the landscape becomes even more enchanting in February.

    Key Highlights:

    • Betws-y-Coed – A charming village ideal for a coffee break before starting the scenic journey.
    • Aberdyfi – A picturesque seaside village known for its golden sands and colourful cottages.
    • Ynyslas Sand Dunes – A short drive from Aberdyfi, offering breathtaking sunset views.

Route: A drive from Betws-y-Coed to Aberdyfi, passing through stunning mountainous and coastal landscapes.
Drive Duration: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

North Devon to Cornwall: A Coastal Adventure

For those who prefer coastal views, the drive from North Devon to Cornwall along the Atlantic Highway (A39) is an excellent choice. This route offers dramatic seascapes, rugged cliffs, and historic sites.

    Key Highlights:

    • Clovelly – A picturesque village with cobbled streets leading to a bustling harbour.
    • Tintagel Castle – A legendary site associated with King Arthur and Guinevere, perfect for history lovers.
    • Bude – A quiet coastal town ideal for romantic walks or beachside activities.

Route: Starting in North Devon, following the A39 through Bideford, Clovelly, Bude, Tintagel, and continuing into Cornwall.
    Drive Duration: Approximately 2 hours.

    A Unique Valentine’s Day Experience

Rory Brimmer, Director at Turo, highlighted the benefits of exploring alternative Valentine’s Day experiences. “With around two-thirds of the UK population planning to spend money on Valentine’s Day, why not try something different? Instead of the stress of last-minute restaurant bookings and expensive set menus, a scenic drive offers an opportunity for adventure and quality time. Even for those looking to avoid Valentine’s Day altogether, Turo provides a variety of car options to suit any group or budget—whether it’s a Galentine’s getaway in a sleek sports car or a sibling road trip along the coast in a convertible.”

Brimmer also pointed out the benefits of car sharing for both drivers and car owners. Car sharing offers vehicle owners a great opportunity to earn extra income while enabling others to experience a diverse range of cars.  Turo offers a diverse selection, from high-end cars to more budget-friendly options, all without the hassle of traditional rental desks or airport pickups.”

    The Future of Romantic Travel

With an increasing number of people seeking unique and memorable experiences, car-sharing services like Turo are redefining how couples, friends, and solo travellers celebrate special occasions. By choosing a scenic drive over a conventional dinner, people can create lasting memories while exploring some of the UK’s most beautiful landscapes.
