SoftServe, a leading IT consulting and digital services provider, has teamed up with Ukraine’s iconic rock band Okean Elzy to drive a lifesaving initiative. The collaboration with the Open Eyes charity fund seeks to gather resources for 30 fully equipped ambulances to aid Ukrainian medics. The campaign’s final push will culminate at the band’s concert at London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town on 4 December 2024. So far, £315,615 has been raised, funding 16 ambulances through the Help for Ukraine Tour 2024.
The Dire Need for Ambulances
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has created an urgent demand for medical resources. According to the United Nations, over 24,600 people have been wounded, and 11,000 killed since the invasion began in February 2022. The situation has worsened in 2024, with intensified Russian attacks on medical facilities, as reported by the WHO. These attacks have disrupted healthcare infrastructure, leaving medics struggling to provide life-saving care in war-affected regions.
“Ambulances and medical supplies are under constant threat,” stated paramedic Yulia Paievska, known by her call sign ‘Taira.’ “The losses are significant, and the need remains critical.” Despite the challenges, the Open Eyes Fund has already delivered over 280 ambulances to medics since the full-scale invasion began.
The Life-Saving Impact
The partnership’s work underscores the critical role of medical support in saving lives during wartime. “One ambulance has the potential to save as many as 5,400 lives each year,” stated Viktoriia Mishchuk, Director of the Open Eyes Fund. With 30 ambulances, we can save tens of thousands more.” Each vehicle is equipped with essential medical supplies, enabling medics to stabilise patients and provide emergency care under dire circumstances. The fund has supported over 221 medical units, highlighting its significant contribution to Ukraine’s healthcare system during the conflict.
How to Support the Cause
Attendees of the London concert will have multiple ways to contribute, including direct donations, purchasing charity merchandise, and participating in an auction featuring exclusive items. Highlights from previous auctions include a flag signed by former Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi and memorabilia from Okean Elzy. The upcoming auction will showcase frontline artifacts, donations from medics, and musical instruments from the band.
For those unable to attend, donations can be made via the Open Eyes Fund or through the band’s online fundraising initiatives, which include exclusive charity merchandise. The collaboration between the band and the charity fund ensures that every contribution goes directly towards meeting the urgent needs of Ukrainian medics on the ground.
A Message of Gratitude and Hope
Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, lead singer of Okean Elzy, emphasised the mission’s significance. “On this tour, we’re sharing our first-ever English album to connect with a global audience. But beyond the music, it’s about standing together. Every day, Ukrainian families face devastation, and while our defenders and medics fight to save lives, they can’t do it alone. We invite everyone to join us in this mission to protect the lives of Ukraine’s men, women, and children.”
Vakarchuk’s words echo the sentiments of many Ukrainians who have seen firsthand the impact of international solidarity. The London concert represents a unique opportunity for people across the UK and beyond to contribute to this vital cause.
Moving Forward
Funds raised through ticket sales, merchandise, and donations will directly support Ukrainian medics through the Open Eyes Fund. With the final concert in London, the initiative aims to meet its ambitious goal of funding 30 ambulances, underscoring the power of music and unity in times of crisis. By standing together, the partnership hopes to bring hope and healing to those most affected by the ongoing conflict.
