The unique atmosphere that envelops these cities during such events is truly extraordinary.”
The Cannes Film Festival tops the list, celebrated for its glamorous setting on the French Riviera and the presence of international stars. Its allure is evident in the high volume of searches from the UK. In second place is the Day of The Dead festival in Mexico. This vibrant celebration, marked by its joyful ceremonies honouring deceased loved ones with an array of traditional foods and music, draws millions of visitors each year.
Carnival Rio de Janeiro ranks third, attracting UK travellers with its dazzling array of colours and lively activities. The festival’s blend of cultural experiences and Brazil’s rich offerings make it a top destination. Mardi Gras in New Orleans secures fourth place, known for its exuberant parades and festive atmosphere that appeal to fun-loving crowds annually. Close behind, Oktoberfest in Munich captures the fifth spot. The festival is renowned for its traditional German costumes, crafts, and festive atmosphere, making it a favourite among those interested in experiencing German culture.
The Allure of Cultural Festivals
Cultural festivals offer a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the traditions and customs of different countries. They often provide a chance to interact with local communities and sample authentic food and beverages that are integral to the cultural experience.
Anna Scrivens, Senior Product Manager at Audley Travel, shared her perspective on the significance of these events: “Attending a cultural festival is one of the most unforgettable experiences you can have while travelling. It offers an authentic glimpse into a country’s traditions and ways of life.”
In recent years, with many festivals being limited or cancelled due to global events, there has been a notable increase in UK travellers seeking to incorporate these celebrations into their travel plans. “We are seeing a rising trend in bookings for these festivals,” Scrivens added. “We recommend planning and booking in advance, especially for popular events. Many of these festivals last several weeks, which provides ample opportunity for travellers to experience them and incorporate them into broader holiday plans.”
