Women dominate US job gains, taking 98% of August’s 162,000 new posts

Women dominated US job gains in August, accounting for 158,000 of the 162,000 new positions added to the economy, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Men gained roughly 4,000 jobs in the same month.

The total figure was nearly triple most economists’ projections of around 55,000.

Why women dominate US job gains: teachers and servers

Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, said the August skew had a straightforward explanation: education hiring and a hospitality rebound.

‘The reason that women were down in July and up in August is almost entirely driven by education hiring, the teacher effect,’ Long told Fortune, along with a recovery in hospitality, where women make up a large share of workers.

Food service and drinking places added 59,000 jobs. Local government education added another 42,000. Together, those two categories made up 62% of all positions created in the month.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics said education employment has shown very little net change since January 2025, with the August rise seen as a reversal of a seasonal summer decline.

In leisure and hospitality, women gained around 68,000 jobs even as the whole sector added only 62,000, meaning men lost 6,000 posts in that sector alone.

Long cautioned against reading too much into a single month’s gender split, calling it ‘noisy’. ‘I think there’s been way too much focus on the month to month, is it men gaining jobs or women? That moves around a lot,’ she said.

    A structural shift, not a one-month anomaly

August’s figures added weight to a longer-running trend. Earlier this year, women overtook men in total payroll employment for the third time in history. Analysts note this latest shift looks less crisis-driven than the previous two, which coincided with the Great Recession and the period just before the pandemic.

Female-heavy industries such as healthcare continue to add workers as male-heavy sectors such as manufacturing stagnate. Fortune reported that health care and social assistance, a sector that is 78.9% female, added 1.8 million jobs between July 2023 and July 2025, accounting for more than half of all US job growth over that period.

Over the last 12 months, jobs held by men fell by a net 142,000, while women gained 298,000, according to Fortune.

‘One of the main drivers of the post-pandemic labour force has once again been health care, where women are highly represented,’ Long said. She added that women also earn more college degrees than men, leaving them relatively well placed to capture growth in some professional industries.

‘It’s not like something dramatically changed for women,’ she said of August’s swing.

June and July payrolls were revised up by a combined 55,000 jobs. The unemployment rate held at 4.1%, while labour force participation ticked higher. Wage growth was subdued, rising 0.3% in August and just 3.1% from a year earlier, the slowest annual pace in years.

Rate hike odds rise after strong report

‘A monster jobs report for August reminds us that this labour statistic has become highly volatile,’ said Bradford Smith, portfolio manager at Janus Henderson Investors.

Traders moved swiftly to price in a greater chance of a rate rise. September hike odds climbed to 52.6% from 49.4% the previous day, according to the CME Group FedWatch tool. The two-year yield rose 7.6 basis points to 4.41%, with the 10-year reaching 4.792%.

Ellen Zentner, chief economic strategist for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, said an upside surprise in payrolls ‘will likely ramp up concerns about a rate hike,’ though she added the decision ultimately rests on the following week’s inflation report. A cooler-than-expected inflation print, Zentner said, could give the Fed room to hold rates steady despite the stronger jobs number.
