ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming has become the richest person in Asia, with Zhang Yiming’s Asia wealth reaching $104.8 billion, overtaking Indian tycoon Gautam Adani, according to Bloomberg.
Zhang’s net worth has since edged higher to $105.5 billion, driven by a $12 billion surge this month alone after fresh valuations from BlackRock and Fidelity.
The figure is nearly eight times the $13 billion Bloomberg recorded when it first began tracking his fortune in 2019.
How Zhang Yiming’s Asia wealth was built on AI
Zhang owns around 21% of ByteDance. He developed the company’s AI technology during the period of regulatory pressure over TikTok in the United States, and Bloomberg has reported that ByteDance can use data from its social media apps to train its AI models.
TikTok counts more than a billion daily active users, with hundreds of millions more on its Chinese counterpart Douyin.
‘He plays his cards right,’ Lian Jye Su, chief analyst at research firm Omdia, told Bloomberg. ‘He stayed on course and then continued to double down on AI investment.’
The scale of that bet is now becoming clearer. According to Sacra, ByteDance is investing approximately ¥160 billion (~$23 billion) in AI infrastructure for 2026, which includes a potential purchase of 20,000 Nvidia H200 chips.
ByteDance’s valuation has also climbed sharply. Sacra reported that in November 2025, Capital Today purchased a block of ByteDance shares from Bank of China Group Investment at a $480 billion valuation.
AI reshaping the billionaire rankings
Zhang’s rise sits alongside a broader reordering of global wealth driven by artificial intelligence.
Michael Dell, founder and chief executive of Bloomberg-tracked Dell Technologies, has gained around $122 billion since this month in 2025, nearly doubling his wealth to $262 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Dell reported better-than-expected quarterly adjusted earnings during its Q1 fiscal 2027 financial results, with AI-optimised server revenue rising 757% to $16.1 billion.
Google co-founder Larry Page overtook Jeff Bezos in net worth last year after unveiling a new AI product. Following the debut of Gemini 3 in December 2025, Page’s net worth rose $6 billion in November 2025, sending his fortune to $252 billion. His wealth has since grown to $293 billion, placing him second on Bloomberg’s global ranking.
Alphabet’s stock jumped 3% after the Gemini 3 launch, which investors and analysts viewed as an advance on Gemini 2.5, released around eight months earlier.
Younger entrepreneurs are also crossing into ten-figure territory. According to a Forbes analysis, the number of self-made billionaires under 30 hit an all-time high last year, with the majority building their fortunes in AI. Among them: 25-year-old Sualeh Asif, creator of Anysphere, the team behind AI editing tool Cursor, valued at $29.3 billion. Gen Z co-founders Adarsh Hiremath and Surya Midha also joined the ranks through Mercor, an AI-powered recruiting startup. Of 11 young entrepreneurs who became billionaires in the analysis, eight did so through AI.
ByteDance’s planned ~$23 billion AI infrastructure spend for 2026 suggests Zhang is far from done pressing his advantage.
